A floating floor can create two different types of noise. Your downstairs neighbour hears the first: the sound of your footsteps travelling into the floor structure. You hear the second: the hollow, drum-like sound of flooring laid over a hard, thin layer. At 5 mm thick, Floor 5 helps address both.
Compared with the 3 mm version, Floor 5 creates a thicker resilient layer between the floor covering and the subfloor. The material helps dissipate some of the energy generated by walking, reducing the transmission of impact sound and the hollow resonance of a floating floor.
Our foam is dense and compact because it is made by compressing and bonding recovered offcuts of flexible polyurethane foam. This is not a lightweight foam sheet that will flatten under a chair leg after six months and stop doing its job.
A 1 m × 20 m roll provides 20 m² of underlay. When calculating how much to order, remember to allow for cuts along walls and around alcoves.
Where Floor 5 can be used
Click-fit laminate and vinyl flooring, as well as floating timber floors. Use wherever the flooring manufacturer permits underlay up to 5 mm thick—a common limit stated in flooring warranty terms.
How to install Floor 5
Unroll the underlay in strips parallel to the longest wall. Butt the edges together without overlapping them. Cut with a utility knife and tape the joints. In a 20 m² room, laying the underlay takes around 15 minutes before you start installing the flooring.
